The Balfour Harrop Rescue Society was formed in 2015 to serve the West Arm outlet communities
Over the years the Balfour Harrop Fire Department has responded or been requested to respond to numerous calls for possible drowning, boat accidents, boat fires, plane crashes and spills on Kootenay Lake. The Balfour Harrop Fire Department does not have a boat (rescue craft), equipment or personnel trained for rescue and response on Kootenay Lake. With this in mind, the members of the Balfour Harrop Fire Department and some citizens of the Balfour, Harrop, Proctor and Queens Bay area have formed and registered ‘The Balfour Harrop Rescue Society’.
The initial objective of the Balfour Harrop Rescue Society is to provide a flat water rescue service on Kootenay Lake near Balfour, Queens Bay and the West Arm outlet communities. The Rescue Society plans to raise money through donations, grants and fund raisers, to purchase a fully equipped rescue craft and to provide the funding for ongoing training; improving rescue capacity and safety on Kootenay Lake.
While the Balfour Harrop Rescue Society’s Board of Directors will look after administration and fund raising; the operation of the rescue craft will be overseen and manned by the Balfour Harrop Fire Department.
